Clinical pathology supports the diagnosis of disease using laboratory testing of blood and other bodily fluids, tissues, and microscopic evaluation of individual cells.
We offer testing on all species in the areas of:
The Department performs a spectrum of testing that ranges from automated, high throughput analysis to specialised 'one-off' testing. Areas of particular expertise include therapeutic drug monitoring, autoimmune serology, endocrine testing, immunoassay, lipidology, protein electrophoresis, and chromatography.
Microbiology is organisms that are invisible to the naked eye, such as bacteria and fungi. Our department offers comprehensive microbiological testing including general Bacteriology, Mycology, Mycobacteriology, Parasitology, Infectious diseases serology and molecular biology. The laboratory is highly automated and provides rapid results using Bactec blood culture system, Uroquick urine culture system, Vitek 2 rapid identification and sensitivity testing, MGIT rapid TB detection, Cobas Amplicor PCR technology and the Lightcycler for “real time” PCR testing.
Histopathology is the microscopic examination of biological tissues to observe the appearance of diseased cells and tissues in very fine detail.
Haematology is a specialty covering the diagnosis and treatment of blood disorders, from conditions such as iron deficiency through to leukaemia
